Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill is taking his time in the summer market.

The Black Cats returned to training earlier this week with only one new face, that of former Aston Villa defender Carlos Cuellar, among their ranks.

He told The Journal: “When we come back from South Korea, I would expect the situation to change.

“We are obviously in the market to try to strengthen our team, of course. I think that’s pretty obvious – all football clubs will be trying to do that.

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins is confident their deal for Rangers midfielder Steven Davis will stand.

Southampton are confident they will be given the green light, allowing Davis to form part of their Premier League plans in 2012/13.

“I’ve seen reports about that but we’re 100 per cent certain that Steven Davis is a Southampton player,” said Adkins.

“Everything is organised, everything is done and he could play at the weekend.

“He has got a little injury, he is recovering from one that he got last season at Rangers, but he is running around, kicking a football on the training ground.

“We won’t risk him at the weekend, we’ll make sure he is right, but he is 100 per cent a Southampton player and if he is fit, he could play tomorrow (Saturday).”

Southampton boss Nigel Adkins has ambitions of taking the club into Europe.

Adkins is confident Southampton can consolidate themselves back among the elite and sees no reason why they should not be setting ambitious targets.

“It’s a very positive future ahead,” he said.

“Nicola Cortese set the dream out and the vision to me to be in the Premier League within five years.

“Since he has been here, they’ve done it in three with back-to-back promotions and we’re very, very ambitious.

“What we’ve got to do is make sure we’re ambitious in the Premier League and not just go there and think ‘oh, well if we can just get enough points to stay up then that will be successful’.

“We’ve got to drive on, strive to be the best and Europe is obviously the goal.”
